The government has confirmed that the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) will officially transition to an independent public body on 27 January 2026.
This marks a major milestone in implementing recommendations from the Grenfell Tower Inquiry and strengthening accountability across the construction sector.
What’s changing?
🔹 BSR moves from the Health and Safety Executive to a new arm’s-length body
🔹 Gains powers to levy charges for advice, research, and services
🔹 Sponsored by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government
🔹 First financial year: 27 Jan – 31 Mar 2026
Minister Samantha Dixon says:
“This change will strengthen lines of accountability and give a dedicated focus to the Building Safety Regulator’s operations.”
