A vehicle recovery driver has been sentenced after failing to properly secure a two-tonne Range Rover during a recovery operation on a steep hill in Bournemouth. The vehicle rolled out of control, trapping the driver underneath before striking a passer-by who attempted to help. [lbc.co.uk]
The passer-by, Kai Dransfield, suffered multiple fractures to both legs and injuries to his spine when the Range Rover rolled over him. More than two years later, he continues to experience chronic pain and difficulty walking. [lbc.co.uk]
Sean Baker, a recovery driver with GRS Recovery Bournemouth, pleaded guilty to breaching Section 7 of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that he removed safety measures that would have prevented the vehicle from moving, including a winch, wheel chocks and breakaway cables. HSE investigators said the incident demonstrates the potentially devastating consequences of failing to follow established vehicle recovery procedures, particularly when working roadside and on steep gradients. [motester.co.uk]
