International Stress Awareness Week takes place from 2 to 6 November, providing an opportunity for organisations to reflect on how they identify, prevent and manage work-related stress.

Work-related stress remains one of the leading causes of ill health in Great Britain. HSE statistics show that 964,000 workers experienced work-related stress, depression or anxiety in 2024/25, resulting in an estimated 22.1 million working days lost.

Employers have a legal duty to assess and manage the risks of work-related stress. Taking a proactive approach can help protect workers, reduce sickness absence and create healthier working environments.

But how, as an organisation, do you achieve this?

Ahead of Stress Awareness Week, we’re encouraging organisations to consider how they:
identify the main causes of work-related stress within their workforce
recognise the signs of stress and encourage open conversations with workers
assess and manage risks using evidence-based approaches
review existing measures to understand whether they are making a difference
Understanding where risks exist is an important first step towards introducing practical improvements.

Reflection: Where in your organisation could changes
reduce the risk of work-related stress?
