Safety notice: offshore – elevated cabin floor windows

HSE has published a safety notice highlighting the risk of falls from height through non-load-bearing glass floor windows in elevated cabins where gratings can be removed.

HSE is investigating one incident and is aware of another outside Great Britain that resulted in fatal falls after gratings were removed to allow cleaning or maintenance of glass floor windows. Elevated cabins are commonly used for activities such as crane operations and drilling, where glass floor windows may be fitted to improve visibility.

Duty holders should ensure gratings are securely fixed and cannot be removed without tools, assess risks associated with work in elevated cabins, and implement suitable controls to prevent falls.

Clear warning signs should also be displayed where non-load-bearing glass floor windows are present.

Suppliers should support duty holders in meeting safety requirements and, where possible, alert current users to this potential hazard Read the safety notice in full: Offshore – Elevated cabin floor windows.
